Some of the best software available today is "open source" or is otherwise free. The techncial quality typically is good and some of it is excellent. Some of it, however, is not particularly user-friendly, easy to understand or straightforward to install; commercial support may not be available. On the other hand, it is free and it can be good.
At Medix, all of our "server-side" is open source software and quite a lot is used on the workstation side. Software such as OpenOffice and mySQL can save organisations many, many thousands of pounds. If you are technically-oriented or work with those who are, many of these packages really are worth evaluating.
