Pathophysiology of Disease - An introduction to Clinical Medicine

Authors: Stephen J McPhee, Vishwanath R. Lingappa, and William F. Ganong

This is a super niche book that will often fill out the areas that large general textbooks often skim over. As the title suggests, this book concentrates on the pathophysiological aspects of diseases. Effectively it provides background information about the basic science aspects of what happens when things go wrong. Now some practicing doctors may not think this is really relevant to what they are doing on a day-to-day process. However, understanding the pathophysiology of diseases leads to a better understanding of what is going on. In turn that can lead to better care and make therapeutic interventions more logical. This may not be every doctor’s approach but if this does interest you then this book is a must read.

It comes from the highly respected Lange imprint which is part of the McGraw Hill group. As a result, it is a no nonsense quality offering with good illustrations and also offering value for money. One good touch is the excellent case histories scattered throughout the text with the answers and commentary forming the last chapter. Within its 760 pages, it gives good broad coverage and although it is unlikely most readers will peruse this book from page 1 to the end, it provides an excellent angle when reading around a specific clinical issue. From this perspective, this book will not disappoint.
