Scientific Writing

Authors: Jennifer Peat, Elizabeth Elliot, Louise Baur and Victoria Kenna

Scientific Writing guides the reader through the process of getting work published. This handbook concentrates mainly on writing papers for biomedical journals but also offers guidance on writing letters, editorials and a thesis.

The authors provide a framework around which to write a paper. This framework adheres to the internationally approved CONSORT guidelines. The purpose, structure, and content of each section of the framework are explained in turn. Practical suggestions are also included such as the benefits of keeping a results table simple.

The second half of the book addresses writing style. The choice of words, rules of grammar and sentence formation are considered. These rules of style are designed to produce writing that is clear, brief and precise. Scientific Writing is well written. The layout of the book is as disciplined as the suggested framework for paper writing. Key points are emphasised in highlighted boxes. The book appears dry but is very readable.

All but the most seasoned writers of scientific work will find this book helpful. It is a must for postgraduates who are beginning to write papers for biomedical journals. Scientific Writing could also be useful for undergraduates composing special study modules or audits.
