Principles of Surgical Management
Authors: Quick C and Thomas P
This well built hardback book is designed for the higher surgical trainee and yet remains very relevant to the practising GP. It is not a standard textbook of general surgery, there are plenty of these around but it is a practical book to help the general surgeon in their day-to-day work. So the sections in operative technique, though interesting as background reading are not relevant to the everyday primary care physician.
However much of the subject matter though in some cases advanced, is highly relevant to a GPs work. It is also primarily a UK book and the layout is easy on the eye, with good and relevant illustrations and most importantly very readable. In fact in places that I randomly read, it was interesting enough to read more despite its little relevance to everyday primary care.
This is a thoughtful and well-produced book that is not primarily aimed at the GP. However it is an excellent reference source, which would nicely complement an undergraduate general surgery textbook and would help a GP read around a subject in an advanced but interesting way.
The review book was a hardback and though this adds to the expense, it does make it more durable if it is going to be used often. In essence, this will appeal to a GP who wants to know more than the basics and likes to read around a subject.
