Principles and Practice of Surgery

Editors: O Garden, A Bradbury and J Forsythe

This is a no-nonsense general surgical textbook primarily aimed at medical students though post graduates, in particular GPs and others who want to refresh dim and distant memories, will find this useful.

Interestingly, it is modelled on its sister publication: Davidson’s Principles and Practice of Medicine, a well-known and highly respected textbook. In fact it follows the same style, a sensible and logical coverage of a subject without going overboard on excessive or unnecessary material. In other words this is core coverage and as such will appeal to a primary care audience. The text is regularly broken up with the addition of text boxes and diagrams, making the read more pleasant and educational. General surgery is well covered as is are the surgical specialities and that includes paediatric surgery. The text is highlighted with an icon, if there is a relevant paediatric surgery point to make.

In just over 600 pages, there is a lot of up to date material here, written in a relaxed and easy to understand style and this should be a worthy companion to any GP in their everyday work.
