Textbook of Family Practice
Editor: Robert Rakel
To publish a book that is titled a textbook family practice (general practice to you and me and acknowledged in page 4 of the book) is an ambitious project to say the least. Apart from covering all the medical disciplines that impact on primary care (now that is one big list), there are also topics such as the principles of primary care, communication and management issues. In fact covering anything that a GP has to face. Now this American based textbook does a super job of trying to cover all this ground in just over 1700 pages. Despite the cultural differences, there is surprisingly not that much difference between UK and US practice. Even practice management topics are broadly similar and any differences are fascinating to read about. The last page in the book (page 1656) before the index is a super account of risk management about avoiding litigation. It rings true for practice in the UK as well.
Most of the book is taken up with clinical issues that affect the day to day work. It deals with a huge range of subject matter and handles them very well.
Despite the hefty price, this is a good solid book and worthy of being a reference source. Equally specific sections can just be dipped into and read for interest. Considering the scope of the subject, this book has handled its brief very well and its maturity is reflected by the fact that this is a sixth edition.
