Facilitating Organisational Change in Primary Care
Authors: Marion Duffy and Elaine Griffin
All aspects of the Health Service are now undergoing change, and these changes have to be managed. Primary Care has undergone many changes in the last decade, particularly in the last few years, and the management of Primary Care is still evolving. There are many books that provide support for organisations undergoing change, but very few that apply specifically to British Primary Care. This is a book that is written for Primary Care workers, and draws on experience gained from research and development projects undertaken by the Tayside Centre for General Practice of the University of Dundee.
The book is written in the form of a workbook and covers how to diagnose a problem in the management of General Practice, including which tools to use in the diagnosis and assessment of the current situation. There are descriptions of the different features of organisations, and here the authors are able to paraphrase other much deeper texts, such as those by Gareth Morgan and Charles Handy, and pick out what is relevant for British GPs. Finally, the authors show how to introduce change and, of equal importance, how to monitor the success of those changes.
This is an easy-to-read overview of organisational change that applies specifically to Primary Care. The book is interspersed with real examples from General Practice, and is full of examples of the different tools that one can use in assessing a management problem, with explanations of how, and in what circumstances, they should be used. In addition, each chapter is prefaced with a summary to help with navigation through the workbook. This may well be the only book that the average GP, Practice Manager or Primary Care Facilitator would need to read on this subject.
