Guide to Health Informatics - 2nd Edition

Author: Enrico Coiera

Over the last decade or so, the invasion of computers and information technology has permeated the practice of medicine and it now very much dominates front line practice. So it’s great to see textbooks that look at this very area. This is an excellent academic review of all aspects of information technology that is applied to healthcare and is not a book for techies.

Far from it, any technology issues covered are well defined and written for a mass audience, and in the main is written by one author, a professor of medical informatics in Australia. This is a huge feat as the subject area is large and the book is 440 pages in length. Covering areas as diverse as the electronic medical record, searching, protocols and communications as well as the Internet, this book seems comprehensive and brings home what a big subject this is.

Even better, this book is divided into well demarcated sections, which makes it easy to just read specific sections. However although the author is an academic, and this book is an academic review, it is also a practical look at the topic, written for everyday practitioners. Health informatics is a growing specialty and so there will be a need for such a book. There is a big demand from a large number of health professionals to know a little more about this subject, this is an excellent choice of book to satisfy the demand.
