Apley’s System of Orthopaedics and Fractures

Authors: Solomon L, Warwick D and Nayagam S

This is a heavyweight of a book. No, it is not a massive tome though this edition (the hardback version) is a well built 781 pages protected within a sturdy cover. It is a superb review of orthopaedics covering the speciality in a seemingly encyclopaedic and authoritative fashion. Despite this extensive coverage, it is not dry - in fact it is well illustrated and there is a liberal use of colour.

There is no doubt that this book is aimed at the trainee and established orthopaedic surgeon, yet surprisingly GPs may also find this book useful. Certainly GPs interested and specialising in the musculoskeletal field will definitely find this book a trustworthy assistant. GPs, generally speaking will find this one volume orthopaedic book, a source of knowledge and I suspect will not need to look elsewhere for routine looking up common and not so common topics and issues.

So if you need just one book in the practice library to cover orthopaedics then you won’t go far wrong here. It is also an excellent book to dip into and learn so if you feel the need to splash out on an all purpose orthopaedics book then consider this book.
