Clinical Obstetrics and Gynaecology
Edited by: James Drife and Brian Magowan
It was just as well that I liked this book, as many of the contributing authors came or were associated with my local patch, Leeds. This is a first edition and to be honest this is an excellent start of what I hope will be a long run into many editions. It is mainly aimed at medical students but is ideal for junior hospital doctors especially those at the lower grades and general practioners as well as midwives and nurses.
It follows the same design format (and acknowledged in the preface) as the well established Kumar and Clark book, Clinical Medicine. This means it is colourfully designed, profusely illustrated-usually in colour and the text is well broken up. There are also text boxes and at the end of every chapter a key points section making this book a pleasure to read. It is also pretty comprehensive and at just over 500 pages, the book seems to give pretty good coverage. Almost everything I could think of that we meet in day to day practice is here and there is even a chapter on statistics, which is always welcome.
All the contributing authors, and there are a good number of them, are British and of course as far as a UK reader is concerned that is great news because everything here is relevant to practice in this country. Though content is king when it comes to a textbook, and the content is very good here, the colour layout and highly readable format makes this an attractive and desirable book. This is an excellent book for both the undergraduate and the postgraduate and at just under £28.00, is well worth the money. The only thing that is lacking (unlike Kumar and Clark which has one) is a website of the book’s content as well as the other expected goodies. I hope that in the next edition that is addressed
