French’s Index of Differential Diagnosis
Editors: Ian Bouchier, Harold Ellis and Peter Fleming
This is an amazing book, it was reviewed in 2003 and so is seven years old and yet seemingly still seems to be fresh and definitely has something to offer the modern reader. The book has an impeccable heritage with the first edition appearing in 1912 under the stewardship of Herbert French. Many books with a long heritage can sometimes lose their way with the passage of time. Fortunately this has not happened to this book.
Despite the fact that there are just over 800 pages, the text is packed tightly together resulting in a manageable and compact size. Even better there are plenty of illustrations and there is massive coverage of all the medical and surgical specialities.
For general practice this can be a real gem, providing information which may not be easily found or quickly accessible in a general textbook. Though there are plenty of lists within the covers of this book, this is more than just a collection of lists. There are oodles of textbook style information covering a large subject area and is an excellent resource for solving clinical problems. Equally this book allows a user to read around a subject area defined by symptoms rather than disease states - a sensible but not commonly used approach.
All in all despite its age, this book still has a lot to offer and hopefully will continue to produce offspring for future generations of doctors.
