Textbook of Psychiatry

Editors: B K Puri, P J Laking and I H Treasaden

This book is aimed at medical students though general practitioners would find this book ideal for their purposes. Unlike many psychiatric textbooks, this book is very readable, written in a relaxed, refreshing, jargon free style, which makes it a pleasure to read. Also the depth of the subject area covered is about right and there are sections on areas such as forensic, elderly, child and adolescent as well as cultural issues (which sadly is a little short as it is an interesting and a current issue). Naturally all the legal stuff is there and the text is broken up with numerous text boxes containing summaries, lists or case histories. There is also the odd diagram as well, which also breaks up the text nicely.

GPs will enjoy this book, simply for its no nonsense practical approach which is often lacking in other psychiatric textbooks. GPs will also like the last paragraph on page 92, where there is advice for a "short discharge letter." Only time will tell if this ever works!
