Community Psychiatry

Editors: Graham Thornicroft and George Szmukler

The title of this book is a little deceptive; this is not a standard textbook looking at psychiatric conditions and their management in the community. In fact, it is a thoughtful, multi-author text that looks at the way psychiatry is practised within the community. In a way it can be considered a public health book, as it explores the ways that community based psychiatry can be used to maximum efficiency away from the institution. After all, such institutions now belong to a previous age and "care in the community" is very much the therapeutic goal of managing mental illness. Such policy has not always been successful, with some high profile failures. So anyone interested in this field, particularly those who are involved with service provision and planning, will want to look at this book. Though there are many UK based contributors, there is a good balance of overseas contributors, which adds to the book's stature. Also individual chapters can be read as a complete section, independent of the rest of the book. So if you are looking to maximise the efficiency of your community based psychiatric service and trying to provide the best possible service, then this book may be very useful.
