The Oxford Illustrated Companion to Medicine

Editors: Stephen Lock, John Last and George Dunea

This is more of an interesting read rather than a textbook and as such is not an essential reference text. It is an A-Z (though by no means comprehensive) of topics either of interest or importance to the practice of medicine. In essence this is more of a popular science book, which is of interest to the general public as well as medics.

However, don’t dismiss this book - it is an amazing collection of interesting information, biographies and historical background. The beginning of the book contains a substantial list of well known and many highly regarded contributors and there are plenty of illustrations.

This book is ideal for a doctor who likes books, historical background and enjoys reading for pleasure. Even better, it is a pleasure just to dip in and read pages at random. In truth it would be an ideal present for the doctor who fits in to these categories.
