Mosby’s Color Atlas and Text of Neurology
Author: David G Perkin
Mmmmmm...classy...nice! These were my first impressions as I started to browse this textbook which is aimed not only at the student but also the graduate who is preparing for higher examinations. It really does look the business with its glossy paper and copious illustrations. More comprehensive reading of the text confirmed the accuracy of those first impressions.
It is a comprehensive account of modern neurological practice with each disorder discussed under headings, i.e. classification, clinical features, management, prognosis and so on. The author makes use of bullet points throughout the book, puts key points in yellow coloured boxes, lists of symptoms in blue boxes and definitions in pink boxes. All of this breaks up the text in an appealing fashion, is easy on the eye and facilitates retention of facts.
From the GP’s point of view, it is an ideal book to dip into and revise a single topic, as I decided to do recently when presented with a patient suffering from symptoms suggesting multiple sclerosis.
In case you had forgotten how, the very first chapter deals fully with proper history taking and examination. There are fifteen chapters in all and an alphabetical index at the end so locating a particular subject is simplicity itself. If you need to buy a neurology textbook - this is the one you should go for.
