Hutchison’s Clinical Methods

Editor: Michael Swash

Any book that has reached a 21st edition and was first published in 1897 is likely to have a successful pedigree. Well this is exactly the case with this fine book which I remember using a student. It goes back to basics covering aspects of history, clinical examination and investigations but it does it in an interesting and informative manner. In fact it is one of the few medical textbooks that actually makes an interesting almost leisure read and yet is very patient orientated.

Apart from the subject matter, there are plenty of illustrations, text boxes and with the clever use of colour, this book without doubt reflects the best of modern publication. However it is the subject matter that sells books and the quality of the text reflects the high quality of production. All major body systems come under the spotlight, including specialities such as ENT, obstetrics and gynaecology and psychiatry. There is also a section covering medical ethics and an excellent section on medical imaging.

Though ideal for undergraduates, GPs will find this book a treasure throve on refreshing their knowledge on the basics. I suspect dipping into this book will generate interest from most GPs and most likely will add to their knowledge base. An excellent book that is perfect for the medic practising in the 21st century.
