Davidson’s Principles and Practice of Medicine

Editors: Christopher Haslett, Edwin Chilvers, Nicholas Boon and Nicki Colledge

I used this book as an undergraduate and have consulted this book over the years and so I awaited this new edition with great interest. This is the 50th anniversary edition and its global appeal is cemented by having an international editor as well as an international advisory board. Okay so this book has an amazing heritage, how does it square up to the new century?

The answer is simple, this book is outstanding. The layout is 21st century with excellent use of colour within the text, the many tables and information boxes and of course the colour pictures. Almost every page has some form of illustration or text box and specific boxes cover EBM points and issues in older people. The quality of the text is fantastic, it is easy to read, comprehensive and the index is substantial. Many chapters are prefaced by a relevant clinical examination section, which again is well illustrated.

There are over nearly 1300 pages packed within this volume and without doubt this is in the premier league of medical textbooks. Also it is pleasing to see that this book does not sit on its laurels, it has continued to progress and prosper and I would hope that at the turn of the next century, it will still be around in some shape or form.

If you want an outstanding and good value textbook of medicine, this is it.
