Manual of Dermatologic Therapeutics

Editors: Kenneth Arndt and Kathryn Bowers

Dermatology is a promising field for textbooks, it is a common topic and since it is a visual subject, it provides good subject matter for a textbook. Now many dermatology textbooks concentrate on the diagnosis side and are profusely illustrated. However they tend (though not always) to be slightly weaker in the therapeutic aspects. So it is good to see that a book is available whose title implies that it is concentrating on the therapeutic aspects. In fact this excellent little handbook running to 401 pages and having roughly the same dimensions as the BNF is a superb review of the subject matter. It is divided into three sections with the first section dealing with 36 common dermatological conditions. The second section deals with interventions such as biopsy, patch testing etc whilst the last section is a well-produced formulary.

Despite the book’s American origins, there is a lot to interest the primary care physician and the dermatologist in this country. The therapeutic aspects of skin care are often overlooked when it comes to producing textbooks and so this book helps to redress the balance. It does it in a succinct and cost effective way and is certainly worth a look.
